In my humble opinion they are both subjective and neither are definite...there are always arguments for and against both...

According to french philosopher Jacques Derrida every ethical decision is a form of insanity (Kierkegaard says something very alike). Derrida's reasoning goes like this: every decision which is derived purely from an ethical system (a set of ethical laws) isn't a real decision, it's just the application of a rule. The decision could even be made by a machine. The real ethical decision therefore is one that cannot be reduced to the application of rules, hence the choice is a form of madness.

Insanity, very broadly defined, is a break from the ordinary structures of one's consciousness. Ethics, in general, is consistent with the structure of one's consciousness. However, the fundamental root of ethics lies in the heart, which transcends, and is not fully understood, by the average consciousness. Thus, the heart is essentially beyond, or above, the structure of one's consciousness and to follow it is, in a sense, to break from one's ordinary structure of consciousness. So, in this way, following the heart in a radical way holds in common with insanity a break from the "rules", if you will, that dictate ordinary consciousness.

If either have a big influence on a person's life, they are mistrusted and have difficulty in fitting in to society. Selfish and unreflective behavior has become the norm in our society to such a degree that anybody who actually tries to live by an ethical code is mistrusted, and probably though of as crazy.

Ethics are a social code of morals and morays we live by.
Insanity can be a breaking of those codes, or can be a situation where their morals are compromised, and rather than bend and adapt, they stanchly hold to their now unreasonable code.
Those of flexible morality or adaptible ways rarely find themselves going insane when their world is suddenly jumbled about.
