i own a repair shop, and it sounds like the temperature sensor is shutting the computer system down on it,,i have seen this happen a few times before, this would explain it cutting off at 170 ,,i think if you,ll replace the temperature sensor located there by the thermostat housing that will fix it for you ,at least its a good start,,i think its a electrical problem and this is the most common cause for this happening to those cars,,i have seen it before on a grand -ams,,good luck with it,i hope this help,s..have a good x-mas.

Sounds like ur car is over heating.First thing to do is make sure the cars temp gauge is accurate. This can be done with a automotive scanner hooked into ur cars computer, but ur car may be to old for this test. You can also take a infared temprature gun and point it at the engine to get a temprature reeading. It really maybe a lot hotter than what the gauge is showing . If it reaches about 225 deegrees at the engine then it will overheat and shut down. So the engine is overheating and shutting down.
Another thing that may cause ur problem is a bad temprature sensor on the engine or possiblely it could also be a clogged up Catalatic Convertor in the exhaust system. check these items for ur answer.
Take it to a shop and they may be able to help u out.

had a '96 that had similar problem, didn't actually die but would buck a skip alot for a short time and then be ok! would never do it for the shop guys and Pontiac would never fess up that they were having any problems. needless to say I unhanded the car as soon as possible. Since then have heard of and have known people with very similar problems as well with their Grand Ams. My personal belief has been since then that GM definately had problems with that car all around, best to get something else :( Oh BTW bought the car new in '96 had it for 1 year and it was in the shop 8 mos of that year.

If the car dies when coming to a stop when hot try starting it immediately. If engine runs until you put it into drive the problem is in the transmission. They had a problem with the torque converter clutch solenoid causing the clutch to stay engaged. If this is the case the torque converter clutch solenoid will have to be replaced.
