why are people prejudice?

i recently did an experiment: the effect of ugly person vs. hot person on the opposite sex.

1) a ugly person is very nice, very helpful, have potiental. but most of the opposite sex do not consider that person for a closer relationship at all.
2) a hot person is sometimes bad, something ok, not too helpful, have some potiental. but many of the opposite sex are constantly chasing that person and consider that person as worthy in every way.

The subject of your experiment is actually a much studied subject, so those who call it retarded are themselves ignorant. The reason for prejudice as described here actually has a lot to do with our brain wiring. Study after study has demonstrated that even newborn babies have a preference for attractive faces, which demonstrates, among other things, that 'beauty' is not just a cultural construct. Attractive faces across cultures were, time and time again, favored by newborns, children and adults.

Things such as symmetry, overall shape, skin tone, etc all play a part in the decision of what is attractive. There is actually a part of the brain for which the sole function is to analyze faces. Evolutionary psychologists hypothesize that this is for the purpose of determining the genetic viability of a potential partner - and further research has in fact determined that the more symmetrical a face is, the greater that person's genetic health.

Now, obviously, the more enlightened person will exercise their brain and look beyond mere looks to determine if in fact someone is worth pursuing for more meaningful interaction. But in the short term or in a 'hit and run' type setting, such as most experiments allow for, the gut reaction/response is going to be determined by that split second automatic decision of our brain, that takes place outside our conscience awareness.

i think often times pretty people with little intellect just represent more of a challenge for those looking for fun rather than long term commitments. Also lots of times, ugly people have very low self esteem. Also the human race is just disgustingly focused on the physical appearance. It is sad but true

People are blind. Most of the time we can't see through the outside skin. Most people aren't blessed with that tolerance that even if something is ugly on the outside it could still be the most beautiful thing on the inside.

INSECURITY is a major cause of prejudice.

In your case study; my guess is that people want perfection in another's appearance, and then hope that the "beautiful" person will beautiful on the inside too, or can be made beautiful internally.
