The Vikings were able to cross the North sea because of their superior ships, they went to Britain and Ireland, Iceland Greenland and even to North America which they called Wine land. They also moved into Central Europe and many settled in Normandy in France, hence the name. They even went as far as Constantinople (Istanbul, today) which they called Miklargard. The Viking era ended in 1066 at the battle at Stamford Bridge when the Danish king was beaten by the Saxons. Many noble British families claim to descend from Vikings among others; the Harcourt's and the Sinclair's. It's very likely that they left Scandinavia because of several years of poor harvests and hunger sent them in search of new land. the viking settlement in Greenland survived until the 1400's.

The Vikings did not all leave the Scandinavian area. Lost of them left because they were running out of room. The convoluted Viking inheritance laws meant that there wasn't enough land to go round, so they left for the British Isles, The Northern Islands (Farø, Iceland, Greenland, and possibly to the North Americas.), and some into central Europe (To Germany via Denmark etc.)

They were members of a race that was rapidly expanding, and needed lands to facilitate that expansion. They colonised parts of Britain, France (the Normans), Moscow, Dublin, Iceland and Greenland. Viking settlements have even been unearthed in America and Canada

They never left , for many century's they raided and pillaged other countries principally Britain , but they were also traders and explorers travelling as far as Arabia and Iceland also there is good evidence that they discovered America long before Columbus, they never left there native land, true they conquered parts of England and some settled here but most of there ancestors are still in Scandinavia

They didn't leave Scandinavia as such.

They just went on very early versions of Club 18-30 holidays (fights, drinking, sex) to places like the UK, Europe, North America (BEFORE COLUMBUS), Africa

The lust for exploration/conquest to settle new lands in search of prosperity, much as did other groups.
They settled in Iceland, Greenland and Vinland(N. America)
They settled in Northumbria and Ireland(Dublin)
They became the 'Normans' in France and even penetrated as far as Kiev in Russia (there is apparently a bit of graffitti in a church there which reads(in runes) "Eric woz here!"
In their spare time, when not plundering, looting and raping, they actually founded civilized cultures, establishing centres of trade and commerce, even adopting Christianity

They went everywhere they could, including to North America. The reason? Treasure hunting and conquest.
