Think about it the majority of the people in this country are Christians, practicing or not. So you market to the masses. By calling it holiday or winter season and such you offend a larger amound to people than by calling it Christmas, only they are usually not the group that raises the most noise, but they are still the larger group of consumers.

This is just my opinion, but....I think it comes down to one word - "Tradition". Most people in the mainstream are not all bent out of shape over the "political correctness" of recent actions by such organizations as the ACLU, and are not offended in any way by hearing the phrase "Merry Christmas", as opposed to "Happy Holidays", which is supposedly used so as not to exclude any groups that may not observe Christmas as part of their religious backgrounds. Stores of all types use "Christmas" in their advertising because Christmas has become the biggest gift-buying & giving bonaza time of year. It's when businesses make the most money. It's highly unlikely that a store would lose business because they used the word "Christmas" in their advertising. The phrase, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" comes to my mind.

They are caving in to a special interest which wants people to think there is a "war on Christmas." They could call it anything they want, it's a sale, not the celebration of the birth of Christ. Still, people like to celebrate a simple brith in manger by whipping out the plastic.
Follow the money...
