My harrdisk has detected few bad sectors. After I formatted the harddisk, now I totally cannot install Windows. The hard drive seems to that not exist in Windows XP setup, but then I can format using the DOS version. By the way, DOS is using FAT16 format, but Windows XP is using FAT32 or NFTS format. Does this the problem? If yes, how am I going to solve this. Please give me some guidelines.

If the hard drive is showing errors, then it is time to replace it.

You certainly don't want to risk losing any important information to save a few bucks.

Trash it and buy another one. Hard drives are very cheap nowadays.

call the manufacture to get the drive replaced. Most of those drives have 3 or 5 years of warranty. Some drives are only 1 year. Just call them up and see if you can get a replacement. XP is using NFTS.

Well Spinrite might be able to check it and free it. However with any hard drive that isn't more than a decade old they remap bad sectors internally from a reserved error that we can't see. If that is used up, you might want to think about replacing the drive anyway to save the hassle if it really goes bad later.

boot from the XP CD, it will give you the option to partition & format the hard disk as part of the install process.
XP does not do fat 16, 32 is it's smallest.
but the XP setup should recognize the hard disk.

Generally speaking, a hard drive showing bad sectors means that it is on the verge of totally crashing. With the low cost of hard drives today, I would highly recommend purchasing a new drive and getting your files backed up ASAP.

This usually means that part of your hardrive is physically damamged and thus it cannot be repaired. However, re-formatting the disc or upgrading your BIOS may help.

Luckily you can buy replacement drives for most types of computers and install them yourself at a modest cost.

Do a back-up NOW!
That can be a ticking time-bomb.
I had one do that, and 3 weeks later it crashed.
Just a buzzing sound is all I could get in 3 weeks.
And it was bye bye files.
