the safest and cheapest way is with boiling water or steam. It doesn't leave a chemical trace and will kill off and nasties. But if ur using them on other people, use some dettol or something like that.

hey Chels, I used to be a beauty advisor for a cosmetic line at Macy's. If you are talking about the foam applicators for eyeshadow, I would say use either your facial cleanser or a gentle, foaming handsoap (antibacterial is best). Wet the applicator really well, put some of the soap in your hand and rub the applicator in it. Rinse and repeat a few times until you see no signs of color. Rinse it one last time and let it sit somewhere out in the open to dry. Same thing goes for the foam foundation sponges, but I would only do that once or twice because eventually you are going to have bacteria building up that will cause you to break out. We just threw ours away after each use, but I realize that it can get expensive when you're paying for them. Hope this helps..

Make up brushes can be cleaned in the same stuff they clean combs in hair salons. You can also clean them in hot soapy water, dish soap is best...its takes the oils from your face out of the brush. Its just a good idea to get new sponge applicators.

It depends if they are foam, sponges, brushes, etc.
You can buy brush cleaner, but thats also expensive. You can use alcohol but that can dry out your brissels. The best thing to do would be to wash them with warm water and moisturizing antimicrobial soap, and let them air dry.
Some sponges you can put in a mug of water and microwave until boiling.
However, when they are nasty toss them out. They could be harboring bacteria that could make you break out, or even very sick. Saving a bit of money is not worth your health.

the people who have posted previously have given good answers. using a mild antibacterial soap and warm (not hot) water is sufficient. i just wanted to tell you that you are supposed to wash your brushes at LEAST once a week. and thats for eye makeup applicators. as far as foundation and blush brushes, you should wash them after every use so you won't break out or in the case of eye brushes, get an eye infection. i just wanted to let you know b/c it sounded like you had never washed your applicators before. good luck :)

I have always used warm soap and water, I had some for years till they fell apart. I also use Q-tips(name brand works best) for eye shadow that way it is a clean application every time.
