yes it is. (in fact, it is the only verb in that previous sentence.) It's sometimes called a linking verb, a helping verb (as in "is typing"), the third person of the verb "to be."

Of course 'is' is a freak n verb!!!
In fact it's a very important verb. It's the copula and it takes many forms, all derived from the verb "to be": Is, Are, Was, Were.

It also has two meanings: (Spanish speakers will immediately recognize this as estar/ser, other Romantic languages have seperate verbs for it I think. Japanese does the same.)

To describe the qualities of something. (X is Y)
And to show the existence of something. (There is X)

A verb does NOT have to show action. Why else would we have the term 'action verb'?

No, a verb is an action word like run, walk, skip, jog, etc. The word is does not refer to action so therefore is not a verb.

noun --names a person, place or thing
pronoun --substitutes for a noun
adjective --describes, limits or modifies a noun
verb --describes an action or a STATE of BEING
adverb --describes, limits or modifies a verb

"Is" is a form of the word "be" as in...
I am, you are, he/she/it IS.
"BE" is described in one of my definitions aboive... can you spot which one it IS?
