When King Oedipus of Thebes learned that he had killed his father and married his widowed mother, he abdicated his throne out of guilt.

The second tragedy of the play was the marriage of Oedipus and his mother. The event that was significant to this is the kingship of Oedipus as a reward for saving the Thebes from the sphinx.

You can see that I didn't feel constrained to keep it as one sentence. Sometimes smaller is better.

Okay basically it is this: the marriage of Oedipus and his mother is the second tradgedy of the play and the event that was significant to this was the kingship of Oedipus as a reward of saving Thebes from sphinx.

Oedipus kills his antagonist, and that antagonist is his father. Then he delivers Thebes from the scourge of the Sphinx and receives the hand of Queen and becomes King, as reward.
