The two bombs had different shapes because of the type of method used to detonate a nuclear explosion.

The bomb known as "Fat Man" was a large and round in shape because it used a series of explosive charges arranged in a sphere around a core of Uranium. When triggered all the charges were detonated simultaneously to compress the Uranium core causing a fission chain reaction as the atoms collided into each other. This design was more difficult to develop because many of the earlier prototypes failed to detonate all charges simultaniously whch would properly compress the core.

The bomb known as "Little Boy" was a much slender shaped weapon similar in appearance to traditional bombs. This weapon used the "Gun-Type" method of detonating a nuclear explosion. The weapon was hollow (like the barrel of a gun). At one end was an explosive charge mounted behind large Uranium "slug" and at the other end was a series of Uranium rings. When the weapon was triggered the explosive charge would "shoot" the Uranium "slug" into the rings causing a fission chain reaction as the Uranium atoms of both pieces collided with each other. This design was much easier to develop that the mor complex design used for "Fat Man".

The bomb "Little Boy" got his name because of is size and shape in comparison to it's companion bomb "Fat Man".

Maybe they thought it was just a small step in atomic bombs. They might have thought it was nothing compared to another bomb 200 years from now.

Henderson advised Szasz that the call Trinity got here from significant W. A. He [then] remarked that the Pope had particular get admission to to the Trinity, and that the scientists could choose all the help they might get to pass the 214 ton Jumbo to its appropriate spot."
