It is ridiculous. How are small market teams going to compete when your going to have start paying 15 million dollars for a backup catcher. Baseball needs a salary cap. I heard on ESPN that the Red Sox have spent like 250 mil this offseason

This is getting really rediculous, Gary Matthews Jr for 5 years and $50 Million? He's mediocrity at it's finest and yet he's getting paid $10 Million a year to play for the Angels?
JD Drew getting paid $70 Million over 5 years is even more rediculous, he's a decent enough player and will put up somewhere between 25-30 HRs per year and around 100ish RBIs, but are those stats worth $14 Million a year? NEVER!
I'm just afraid of what good players are going to be asking for when their contract ends, the MLBPA has got to put their foot down and the GMs have got to stop paying out these exorbitant salaries to players. It's going to drive more fans away than it will attract.

It is a joke, they are trying very hard to price everyday fans right out of attending games. Funniest part of the whole deal is over the last 5 years it seems that the mid to lower pay role teams are the teams winning. A perfect example was this past season when the Tigers, Twins and A's (all mid to lower pay role teams) all made the playoffs while the big spenders watched the playoffs from the comfort of their couchs. Money doesnt buy winners most of the time, it just pacifies the local fan base in the major market area's (until they get knocked out of the playoff race!!!)

MLB GMs are like kids... they see a player they want and then they do whatever it takes to get that player...(even 256 Million for Alfonso Soriano) They overpay anybody if they really want them on their team... You are right, it is ridiculous, if they continue, It will definitely need a BIG time salary cap.... (but that will never happen). Nowadays, the teams are so competitive, that they get all the players they can, (even if they have to spend 100's of millions of $ to get them!!!) They just don't care! It isn't their money...

I can't boycott baseball, Christians can't boycott Christ...
but I am confused as to why teams are competing for players like TED LILLY, around a .500 pitcher. This only makes me think? What will happen next year when the real big names like Andrew Jones becomes a free agent. I really want the Yankees to win next year, they seem to be the least free-agent active team out there; only making smart trades for young, talented pitchers.

It is out of control. I believe in the patriots approach. Have lots good players, and makes a team great. Not one or two great players and subpar (pro) players as the rest.

You are totally correct. However, why are you confused? It's par for the course. It's been going on for years where mediocrity is highly rewarded!!
