IQ is a measure of many separate talents or abilities. Doing physics only requires that you are good at only a few of them. I have met some physicist who might also have written novels, or been a lawyer. However many/most do not have talents that suit them for verbal professions. The reverse is also true. For most people it is not general IQ that matters but finding out what you are good at and liking it enough to work hard. I guess my answer is that it sort of matters.

Does physical strength matter? Does beauty matter? IQ is simply a measure of capacity to perform mental tasks. Does that matter? For a clue, consider the highest-paying occupations. Are they primarily mental or primarily something else?

Yes but employers are looking more at EQ these days. It stands for emotional quotiant eg: What you would do in a crisis, how you handle an abusive client, how you hndle a work load needing a tight dead line. IQ measures knowledge but not other important social skills and workplace negotiations.

If you can figure out the proper amount of energy required and the proper trajectory for a space ship to take off, leave Earth's atmosphere and rendezvous with Jupiter, then no, Intelligence is not important.
