I know the West has been better in the past, but now the only good teams left in the East are the Cavs, Pistons and Magic.

THE WEST HASN'T BEEN BETTER. SINCE 1990 THE EAST HAS WON THE TITLE 9 TIMES. PLEASE TRY TO GET YOUR FACTS CORRECT BEFORE YOU FORM AN OPINION.

Bobcats are a recent expansion team so nobody wants to sign there, Miami has too many injuries so they have one superstar to rely on, Detroit still can beat teams in the west, Chicago lacks that one superstar and overpayed Ben Wallace, Orlando is doing great, Raptors and Celtics are rebuilding their franchises, Cleveland is doing alright, Pacers are a plagued team who lost Peja to free agency (who moved to the Hornets a western conference team), Atlanta has been mediocre for years and Joe Johnson is finally showing that he is a superstar, Washington has been a mediocre road team and lacks a true center, Milwaukee and Sixers both has/have injury problems and Chris Webber is killing the Sixer's cap space with his 20 million a year contract for 2 more years.

Now for the West lets see...

Suns are doing great (best point in apg), mavs have Mark Cuban who can afford a bunch of great player like Dirk, Howard, Terry, Stackhouse (once upon a time scoring champ), Spurs have Duncan, Parker and great coach Popovich, Jazz have taken the league in storm by finishing games better this season, Lakers have Kobe and Odom doing it all, Clippers have Brand, Nuggets have Melo, Camby, Miller, Smith, Memphis is plagued with Gasol's injury, Hornets is plagued with recent injuries too, GSW has had its fair share of injuries too, Houston has Yao playing like an MVP, Minnesota has KG but with a mediocre this year Mike James, Sacramento has an injured Artest who recovering, Seattle lost its coach 2 years ago and cant get it done, and Portland is a rebuilding franchise.

From the looks of things 13 of the 15 teams in the west can make the playoffs from the east. The east just lacks too many superstars and in place of absent or injured plays in the west, bench players are making their mark. The east lacks those hidden bench talents that the west has. This is what I think what is killing the east.

Free agency has made the west better. Players can choose where they go, and guys who want to win championships go to the contenders or teams that are up and coming.
Look at Michael Finley going to San Antonio, Tracy McGrady going to Houston, these are just 2 examples.
Lets face it, a lot of Eastern Conference teams just stay stagnant and don't make any deals, that's why Allen Iverson is stuck in Philly and Paul Pierce is doing the same in Boston, and their teams have not improved in the last 5 years.
Bottom line, now in the NBA, as with MLB and the NFL, free agency has turned everything around. You either have to be a contender or be a team on the up swing trying to build a contender to attract free agents.

That's a good question. You would think there would eventually be a balance or shift because of draft picks and young talent but there has not been. I would have to say money or that a shift takes more than ten years. It is pretty pathetic right now. Basically any team in the West placed in the Eastern Conference would be in the playoffs. There is a good amount of young talent in the East but it isn't translating into wins.

Don' t forget the Miami Heat! Even without Shaq right now, they are holding their own! As far as the west: they have the lakers vs jazz blowout, and the suns vs net game last night...161-157! alll great teams! At this point it to early to see who will come out on top, but it's been a great season so far!!
