Internals take up less space and an IDE cable slot that you might not have. External uses a USB port. I have read some forums about externals overheating, but I think this issue is brand specific.

internals are so much faster, cheaper, and more reliable than externals. if you need it in a different computer its only a couple screws and 2 cables to hook up, a 5 minute job. the only advantage to external is the fast swapping via USB or Firewire, other than that go w/ the internal. you can get a good Lite-On DVD-RAM/R/RW/Lightscribe drive off Newegg.com for under $40
and about the power: if you run out of power when you hook up an optical drive thats just sad. i can run 2HDD, 2 optical drives, a FDD, my GF FX5500, 2 92mm fans, a modem, a NIC, and my CPU/mobo all off a stock 250 watt supply that came w/ my HP.

Hope that helps

The only benefits to using an internal one is it won't take up more desk space and they're cheaper.

A few downsides to internals are they run off the internal power supply, externals don't. Internals require more cables be run inside, creating more blocks in the air-flow. If you have more than one PC, you can easily move an external to another desktop or laptop... plug and play.

But for usage? They both work the same.

It's better off for you to get the internal one. Dvd burners are not expensive now, so you can get one for every computer. There is no need to use one external burner for all systems. External one is way too expensive and its burning speed is not as fast.

No, usually nine times out of ten an internal is a little faster but externals are more useful because you can take it and put it on any machine you need. If you have the money you can get very reasonable external drives from http://www.newegg.com or http://www.tigerdirect.com and just click on CD/DVD burners

Speed and Price.
Internal DVD burners are cheaper and can run much faster than external, which have to use either a USB or firewire cable.
