I've been teaching in Taiwan for almost 4 years now, so obviously I enjoy it quite a bit. The money is good, especially compared to the cost of living, and Taiwanese people are very accepting of Westerners. It's also one of the safest countries in the world in respect to crime.
There are some pitfalls though. First, be extremely careful when dealing with agents of any kind. It seems that there main purpose in life is to screw foreign teachers. Use them if absolutely necessary, but NEVER trust them. Some schools can be a bit shady as well, so do your research before you go. Also, Taiwan is a fairly dirty country, something even the locals will admit to. Be prepared for a certain amount of pollution in any of the cities. Finally, as with any country, you will experience culture shock no matter how much you prepare before hand. You'll be eating new foods, hearing different languages, and dealing with a different way of life. While this can be incredibly rewarding, it does take some getting use to.
Feel free to email me if you have any specific questions. Best of luck.

Northern Taiwan will mean Taipei or environs.
The cultural adaptation WILL be bigger than anything you can prepare for. Therefore, in your first year better to work for a big cram school franchise who will help orientate, train and support you. I worked for Hess in my first year here. Have been here three years so far. Don't know their web address but just type "Hess Taiwan" in your search engine.
Best site for teaching jobs in Taiwan and general info is www.tealit.com. Check it out.
Taipei (north) is wet, Taichung (middle) has best weather, Kaoshiung (south) is hot. Everywhere its warm and humid. Winters can be mild.
Tip when working with taiwanese: never debate or question anything - these people don't view cooperative management and suggestions as something positive. I'm still not getting that right.
Be prepared to do some lateral thinking - the Chinese culture is VERY different from the West.
