Friend , I should think you are coming froma country /society that still values people by what job they do. I may mention that "caste system" developed only on the basis of discrimination.. Earlier to this all jobs were considered necessary for a smoother running of the society.

The moment MONEY was invented and paid out on discrimination basis, we had this kind of a thinking that you have stated. I may add that there are countries/societies/people who have a way out by importing ( what they call) cheaper labour from the neighbouring countries.

Coming to your question, the average person , in any society , accepts a job that he is apt at doing and then tries to graduate up. The "peer pressure' works on him to improve his earning status and not his class status. Classwise he will be eternally chasing the Bill gates and Donald trumps.

Lastly, a taxi driver is a driver. So is a Aircraft driver. But, look at the staus symbol our pilot has! Why do you think our parents are constantly asking you to study well and graduate ? Only to give you better start. Instead you ( we) keep wasting time in schools and colleges and start at the lowest point of the ladder in life. These days the competition is more intense at the lower end of the job spectrum than the upper end.

With no real offense, I'm confused about what culture,or world you live in?

I have been on this planet a long time, working at many jobs, up and down any SOCIAL scale, and BTW,,, I personally know people with PHD's who, during times and circumstances not strictly chosen by them, have "flipped burgers" at fast food franchise establishments, to survive.

Another thing that confuses me is why anyone might be guided in their life by anyone else opinion?

Say YOU were/are a cab driver. Is there something wrong with that occupation, no matter your education? Perhaps it's a means to an end? Is there something "DESTRUCTIVE" or NON PRODUCTIVE" in being a cab driver? (your example)

If would hope that real friends, no matter what the *social class* may be, would respect the fact that you are working hard and paying your bills. If you love your employment choice, then you and your career of choice should be respected and excepted by your friends. I have 2 sisters who both spent a whole lot of my parents money becoming educated at top of the line universities....20 years later, one is doing what she loves, teaching in a Christian school, but making very low wages doing so, and is on the brink of losing her home...the other is baking for a restaurant, earning 7 dollars an hour...and as far as I see it mooching off a family friend.....I did not go to school beyond high school...I am employed by a fast paced medical office...I have my home paid off, and I raised 3 wonderful kids...My sisters looked down at me and continue to do so, because somehow I am not in *their* social class...simply because I choose to not go to school for a degree...so much for *social class*!!!!

What do you mean??!?!?! I think taxi drivers are VERY important people in society! I mean, they transport people to important places! Do you think an airline pilot is important? I do. Its the same concept. I wouldnt let anyone influence my decision. I think taxi drivers are a very importnant part of society just as pilots, bus drivers and naval navigators.... have I missed any other type of transportation? I hope this helps. ...and tell your friends they need to rethink the services that taxi drivers provide!

No not at all, my bills are being paid and I am satisfied and even enjoying the work. I would see my position as consturctive, I am paying bills and enjoying the position and interaction with people I would see it also as porductiive. No way, I may however choose different friends since those seem so shallow and their attitudes are not productive or constructive. God bless****

If I needed a job and the only availabilities were below my social class, I would take it in a second, for the interim. As I worked I would be looking for a better one. In reality there is no job that is below my social class. When push comes to shove I turn into a wet-back in a split second. When the wets are demanding $8.00 per hour, I'll take $6.00, no problem.

below your 'social class' what century are we in? im a server and it pays my bills. do i enjoy it? no. does it make me lesser than someone who is working a 'better' job? no. i hate when people think it's not a 'real' job. it is a real job i go to work and i get money. that's a job period. am i trying to better my situation financially? yes. just because my job pays less than another doesn't put me in a different 'social class' cause i've met a lot of people that are rich and have no class.

“If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets even as Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music, or Shakespeare wrote poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, here lived a great street sweeper who did his job well.” Martin Luther King, Jr.

I hope this answer, above quote- sheds light on your question!

What's important is your hapiness in this social ranking. No one needs to live trying to just make everyone else happy. My attitude is to look out for #1 first (which is you). As long as you're happy who cares what other people think.
