I work as an engineer, but i am pretty sure I'm about to get laid off.
I want to become a trucker and i would aspire to start my own company.
What do you think about your career choice? I am tired of being behind a desk, and fed up with the corporate environment

My husband is a trucker. He has done it off and on for over 20 yrs. He likes it most the time. Depends on the company. Now owning your opwn truck and business is very risky and very involved. You have all the costs, responsibilities and can loose it all. The insurances and taxes and repairs and fees and paperwork involved is a lot. You really should get out there and do it for a year or so to see the ins and outs. that way you have a better idea of what is involved. Drivers are very different. My husband is an excellent one. he is responsible, likes to drive and likes to keep moving. he can get very angry when he is sitting and not making money. He isn't the norm. A lot of them are arrogant, lazy and foul mouthed and don't want to move that much. The roads are getting more and more dangerous because young drivers and four wheelers (cars), cause a lot of accidents and near accidents out there. Also, the weather takes a toll on the trucks and the repairs are very expensive. Fuel is expensive. So, get out on the road before you invest that much into a business that you may think you know but probably don't. Good luck whatever you do.

Trucking is great career for the right person. You need to be willing to work all hours of the day and be able to handle an erratic sleep schedual. You can find any type of driving job you would like from grocery to bulk tankers and what have you. Heck if you dont care but really want to drive a purple truck there is a company out there for you. It is hard on a family but it can be dealt with. If you are married and your wife does not want you gone so much it probly is not the job for you. if you are married and your wife DOES want you gone that much it probly is not the job for you. You can make good money or bad money dependiong on how much of yourself you want to put into the job. As for starting your own company, You will make alot of money but 90% of it will go back into the truck in fuel ,insuranse and maintainence to really make it profitable. You would have to be extreamly dedicated to the truck and the profession to honesy enjoy it at that point.

Yeah, that's a big 10-4 there, Pig Pen, yeah, we definitely got the front door, good buddy. Mercy sakes alive, looks like we got us a convoy... .
