It was infected with virus I zero-filled the hard drive and reinstalled the Win XP SP2 & upgraded it with the advanced security version. Although configuration is good enough with Pentium 4, 1.52 GHz, 256 MB RAM, 40 GB Hard Disk. I also want to install Antivirus so that I can check the files previously stored on the hard drive for virus infection. My system used to be very fast but now I dont know what is wrong with it ? It takes longer time to boot and shut down programmes work slowly, copying of files is slow. I mean altogether it has become slow. Please help me to solve this problem.

256 MB of memory is fairly minimal, btw, it would run better with 512.

How did the files previously stored on the hard drive get back there? It sounds like you have re-imported your virus problem.

If you are not running any antivirus soiftware, download comodo, it's free and quite effective.

Working with a slow computer can be time consuming as programs/ applications take a long time to start. This problem is more pronounced in computers which have been used for 6 or more months. More information at http://fixit.in/slowcomputer.html

your pc has good specifications..... if your pc is internet connected, maybe its not only a virus that makes your system unit slower there might be chances that trojans, worms or other malicious program affects your pc.... so its not enough to have an updated win xp sp2 or something or a single anti-virus alone... so i suggest try to equipt your pc some free to download anti - spy, adware, malware program available also in the internet ^_^

you may have a lot of programs that open up automatically when you first turn it on, when you look at the bar in the bottom right it shows some of them usually, try right clicking and if available tell them not to load when on start-up
