I just started using eBay today, and after reading some insruance policies (didn't make sense) I decided until I know all about insurance of items on eBay, I'm not going to add insurance. Okay, here's my question: eBay said that insurance for items must be purchased from a third party client (or something.) But does that mean I can offer insurance myself? And what's to stop people from just taking the insurance money and not insuring the item? Thanks.

If you insured it yourself, you are in violation of the eBay terms. A third party means any agency not affiliated with yourself or eBay. Also, you don't pay for the insurance, the buyer pays for it if they want it. Or, if it's part of your incentive for someone to buy your product, than you include it in your price and call it shipping and handling and purchase the insurance from the post office.

There is nothing to keep people from taking the insurance money and not insuring the item. However, those sellers take a risk.

I used to sell videos on eBay. I shipped them uninsured, and just replaced any the post office broke. It was cheaper to replace 1 for every twenty I shipped than pay insurance for all of them. I didn't charge for insurance, I just charged shipping and handling.

The post office sells insurance.

Truthfully if you are selling used items most insurance is worthless. It won't pay off without an appraisal - an invoice from an eBay sale is not enough.

Pack your sales well, then ship with delivery confirmation and you will have very few problems.

Very few people actual choose to insure their eBay items. I have done thousands of transactions on ebay and had very few problems. I would suggest only considering insurance if an item is more than $500.

The insurance providers listed on ebay are contracted by ebay and are reputable companies. None the less insurances companies make tons of money preying on innocent consumers who think they need insurance when they really dont.

insurance is based on the cost of the item
naything under $50 its $1.35 to insure
over $50 and you resort to using USPS 's postage calculator.

ALWAYS provide insurance. it protects you as a seller in case something happens.

And ALWAYS provide tracking (via delivery confirmation).

IF you have paypal, you can purchase your shipping/postage all in one transaction, including insurance and delivery confirmation is free.
