Amazon.com is one of the most reputable online shopping Web sites, but that doesn't mean that you are completely protected from fraud using their Web site. Unfortunately, there are many criminals who surf the Internet, looking for credit card numbers, debit card numbers, and checking account numbers, so that they can make purchases, and ultimately a profit on unsuspecting people. The experts say that you should not make purchases online using your debit card, because your debit card is generally linked to your bank, and even if your debit card only works with one of your bank accounts, such as your checking account, a true mastermind criminal could easily pull up all of your account information for every bank account you have in your name with a specific banking institution and wipe out your checking and savings accounts.
Amazon.com is also a Web site that stores your credit card information, or in this case debit card information for future use, they also store all of the addresses that you use as shipping addresses. Unfortunately, what this means is that a true criminal could easily figure out your Amazon.com password, especially if you use the same password on multiple Web sites, or a very common, generic, or computer generated password.
If you do not have a credit card, I would recommend purchasing an American Express card or a similar "card" that works like a credit card, but can be purchased like a gift card at places like 7-11, and from major retailers. You can then put as much money as you want on the card, from your account, and give online shopping Web sites the American Express card number without having to worry about giving out your bank information or your debit card number.

Yes it ok. In the U.S. you do have protection for a debit card.
It is really not that safe to use your cards (credit or debit) anywhere. I use mine debit card all the time but keep an eye on my checking accounts everyday. If I noticed an unauthorized charge. I have my debit card hot carded. I do have a separate checking account that is used for online and over the phone purchases. I never sign up for any service that requires automatically billing.

In theory it is as safe as a credit card. However, it is more risky. The reason is simple, if you use a credit card and it is stolen (compromised) the credit card company will go after them for the money, giving you a credit while the investagation in ongoing. However, if your bank account is compromised, you will lose the money until the investigation is finished and then, you are responsible for a certain amount. This just happened to a friend of mine and the person took all the money in their bank account and left them negative over 800K. Not a typo...it is a mess. They had to close the acct and they had all sorts of returned check fees because they were overdrawn that amount.

Just to make sure your okay I would set up another checking account with a different password etc, just for online stuff and only keep like 50 dollars in there. That way if they do get that one, its only 50 rather than like hmm 10K dollars. But yes, Amazon.com is pretty safe.
