If you can get a Haynes Manual for the 87 Camry it will tell you where to set your timing belt or chain. I'm changing the head gasket on a 2004 Highlander right now and hoping I don't have any problems with the timing. I'm using a Haynes Manual and it gives the settings there. It's well worth the $25.

Good luck!

I ASSuME that you are referring to the ignition base timing.
Locate the black DIAGNOSTIC box on the left side in front of the master cylinder. Open it, and use a paperclip to jump between T1 and E1. (They are identified in the lid of the box)
Start the car, and adjust the timing to 10° BTDC and secure the distributor. (these bolts are 10mm, and one of them is very hard to see).
If the timing is currently more than 20°, you won't be able to adjust it until you replace and adjust the throttle position sensor.
If you need more detail, E-Mail me direct at russhess@sbcglobal.net. These little YA boxes don't offer enough room for detailed instructions.

Good Luck and Merry Christmas
