There's not some magic way that the networks know that YOU personally are watching or not watching their show. The ratings are based on "Nielsen families" and how those families report their viewing. (Some families are long-term reporters, like they'll report their viewing habits for a year or something; others just short-term, like a week or two.) So whether you specifically watch that show or not, that will not affect the ratings.

Generally the "ratings" are the Nielsen Ratings, which are figured by having a few households keep track of everything they watch and an average for the whole nation is figured offf of that. So unless you are a "Nielsen family" then what you watch doesn't matter for ratings.

Ratings are based on Nielsen families, who fill out a form to indicate what they've watched. They then extrapolate the numbers from that.

TIVO users also have their viewing habits recorded, but not individually, and they're not used by rating companies.
