OK, let's say the New Jersey Devils are playing the Boston Bruins. In the first period, Tim Thomas, the goalie for the B's get hurt. He's out for the game. So they put Hannu Toivonen, the back-up in. He gets hurt as well, out for the game. After Thomas and Toivonen are out, they'd put in Brian Finley (Bruins carry 3 goalies). OK?

Now, what happens if Finley is knocked out as well? No goalies left on the bench. This actually goes for ANY NHL team. If you run out of goalies, in the course of the game, what happens? I would imagine the refs tell the team they can dress any other player a goalie, they have 15 minutes to do so, or the game is forfeit. But I don't know if that's what really happens. So, someone who knows hockey better than I, what's the deal?

Add a side question to this, actually. Has this ever happened, all the goalies on a team injured or ejected I mean?

Why? Because I'm curious. That's all. I thought that was kinda the point of Yahoo Answers. To find out the answers to things that you are curious about, or don't know.

yes like one said back a long time ago Lester Patrick was actually the coach of the Rangers but back in those days they only had one goalie per team. but yes if both goalies get injured a player from the team has 20 minutes to suit up and a 2 minute warm up.

Basically, what happens is someone active on the bench or anyone in the stands can suit up and play goalie.

The most famous instance of this was back in the original 6 days when Lester Patrick, who was then a coach, suited up after his goalie got injured (teams didn't carry backup goalies back then) and ended up winning a playoff game.

As many have said, they can go through their options of another person filling in the goalie spot. I can't remember who did it, but it happened once where one person played every position (Right wing, center, left wing, left d, right d, and goalie) in a single game.

Another option is just sending out six skaters. Just like at the end of the game when the team pulls their goalie, without a goalie there are entitled to an extra skater. I've played in some USA Hockey games where both of our goalies were either sick or injured so we just skated six people the entire game. Normally the outcome didn't work out so great, though it did get us a win once...

A team may bring a person out of the stands if this situation were to occur. Usually teams have practice goalies (to save wear and tear in practice) and often they are at the games but they can get anyone who is readily available. Some teams even have a forward practice as an emergency goalie. Without getting into lengthy discussions about has it ever happened, the short answer is yes. Far more often than most realize. Before the late 60's many teams often only carried one goalie (owners hated paying a player to sit) and on many occasions a coach put on the pads and finished games. There are some good books and the best to read some of these stories is "Without Fear- Hockeys 50 Greatest Goaltenders". It is a great book and well worth anyones time if they enjoy hockey stories.

You are correct. The team will dress a player to finish the game. The only time I'm aware of it happening was in the 40's and the NY Rangers dressed Lester Patrick to finish for the goalie that suffered an eye injury.

If the team does get two goalies hurt or lost (ejection?), it can try to round someone up in the building. The goalie coach is probably the most likely candidate for the job. Failing that, it's time to ask for volunteers. One time, forward Mike Foligno was ready to suit up for the Sabres if the second goalie couldn't continue. (Goalie number one, I believe, was hurt, but goalie number two finished the game.)

I've never heard of two goalies on the same team getting hurt in the same game. It seems less likely than, say, two quarterbacks getting hurt in the same football game. That's why the third quarterback can enter the game even though he's technically on the inactive list. The Lester Patrick incident mentioned happened in the 20's, when teams only carried one goalie.

Pray to God continuously whilst attempting, as God facilitates people who help themselves extremely than people who're lazy. Lord Krisna stated in Bhagavad Gita, we would desire to consistently carry out our works and resign the fruit of our action. So we would desire to save attempting and locate excitement in doing our artwork, whether or no longer we get the needed result. we would desire to consistently no longer lose wish. Do your terrific and bypass away the rest to God,that's going to all come precise some day or night.
