I believe they used James Earle Fraser's rendition of the buffalo (bison) on the new gold bullion coin, that just came out a while back. So that is his initial. He designed the Indian head, buffalo type nickel, minted from 1913-1938. As a tid bit of history, the bison was modeled after "Black Diamond" in the New York Zoological Gardens.

James E. Fraser, the famous mint engraver created the Indian Head-Buffalo Nickel design. His initial "F" is found in very small print beneath the date.
