That is definately dropsy, and it is almost always untreatable. You could try a course of Maracyn-2, but it usually does not cure dropsy.
The best you could for him is to put him in a real, cycled tank (5gallons+) with a heater.
I hope he pulls through, you never know! At least 2 1/2 is a fairly decent lifespan for a captive betta.

a fish with dropsy is quite bloated in the stomach area, if the scales are on end that is indeed a sign. I would definitely try a broad spectrum antibiotic as a last ditch attempt. Tetracycline will turn water red, but works well. There are medicines out there for dropsy.
If you do want to destroy the fish, which sometimes is more humane, soda water will do it in about 3 seconds. Place him in a cup of it. I do find that more humane than pet stores that will flush him, or snap his neck!!

Dropsy indeed! I lost my 3 1/2 year old betta to dropsy. His condition seems pretty advanced, however heated, clean, filtered water with some tetracycline may help. It is worth a try. You have some years with him so I would go for it, but it will put quite a dent in your wallet. It may be time to say goodbye. I also suggest soda water to end his suffering.

If it's dropsy, it's almost always caused by a virus and is untreatable. With the poor breeding of these guys nowadays, they aren't living much longer than 3.
If caught earlier, you may have been able to kick his temps up to 86 for 10 days to help him fight off the virus, but because he's already pineconed, it's probably too late.
I'd make him comfortable :(

a million/2 a gallon? how is he no longer yet lifeless? the minimum for a betta is arguably 3, maximum say 5 gallons. a vase is not any place for a fish. i reckon what you have is bacterial blossom - many times cloudy water does not seem the instant an aquarium is desperate up. rather apparently days, weeks, or perhaps months later. In those circumstances the reason being oftentimes because of bacterial bloom. because of fact the hot aquarium is going via the preliminary wreck in cycle, that's now commonplace for the water to alter into cloudy, or a minimum of a sprint hazy. that's going to take numerous weeks to numerous months to verify bacterial colonies that are able to sparkling wastes from the water. over the years that cloudiness will settle on itself. Decaying vegetation or extra food that maintains to be uneaten could additionally reason the milky water seen in bacterial bloom. in spite of the reason, do no longer panic over bacterial blooms. protecting the aquarium very sparkling with the help of eliminating debris which includes decaying vegetation and uneaten food, vacuuming the gravel oftentimes, and appearing partial water adjustments, will rapidly settle on maximum circumstances of bacterial bloom. cut back back feeding to each 2d or 0.33 day, which will cut back down on extra food decay. If there are debris of debris interior the water which you at the instant cannot do away with with the help of employing water adjustments and vacuuming, a flocculent could be used to sparkling them away. Flocculates reason debris of debris to clump mutually so as that they are able to genuinely be bumped off with the help of the filter out (make certain to bathe your filter out so that's working at height performance). Flocculates are many times marketed as water clarifiers, and could be discovered at your fish save.
