The Lover by Marguerite Duras
Hiroshima Mon Amour by her is actually a screenplay, so very short
On Love by Alain de Botton - short, funny, easy to read, but also thought-provoking
The Elementary Particles, Platform or The Idea of an Island - all by Michel Houellebecq
Mammals by Pierre Merot
Anything by Guy de Maupassant

I think you could do no better than The Stranger by Albert Camus!
It's a relatively short novel, originally written in French (L’Ãtranger). Granted, Camus wrote it using a supposed "American" style (short, precise sentences and simpler words for the first half of the book, and more advanced in the second), but it's still a French novel.
I once knew a girl online who, when I happened to mention the book, said it seemed like a French book on her parents' bookshelf--and even though she was relatively a BEGINNER French student, she was able to pick it up and understand the most of it with a little translation help!

Some books I recall reading for high school French include Albert Camus' "La Peste"; Jean-Paul Sartre's "Les Jeux Sont Fait"; Antoine Saint-Exupéry's "Le Petit Prince"; and Eugene Ionesco's "Rhinocéros" --- all good, look on Amazon for a synopsis of each. Bonne chance!

Do you have to read it in French?
La Symphonie Pastorale by Andre Gide was very good and isn't too long.
I also like the Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery, it is ostensibly a children's book but it's message is actually aimed at adults.

If you have to read in French, you might try something relatively simple and easy, like The Stranger by Albert Camus, or something by George Sand.

I think All Quiet On The Western Front was written by a Frenchman. Erich Maria Remarque. You could search for the book in French.

I know tons. What genre do you like?
I would recommend to you, my favorite playwrite, Eugene Ionesco, who is Romanian but wrote in French.
He wrote "Les Chaises" (The Chairs)
and "Rhinoceros"
"L'avenir est dans les oeufs" (the future is in eggs)
and tons more.
You can probably find these plays in Borders Books, look in the theatre section or perhaps literature.
I LOVE these plays, I hope you enjoy them!

Yes! Madame Bovary by Flaubert. Not sure if someone already suggested it, but it is great.
