Of course. Our enterprise has over 2,000 PC's. With the domain running on Windows 2003 servers, WSUS, RIS, SMS...etc, those 2,000 are easily managed by only three Desktop Support personnell.
We mainly purchase Dell PC's. Since their support is so good, we don't have to worry about hardware maintenance.
We purchase many of the same models so we only need less than 20 RIS images for them all. HAL incompatibilities are not a problem if they are all identical.
Software updates and Windows updates are managed by SMS and RIS so if 50 people need say Adobe Reader, a few clicks and they all get it in less than an hour.
It's cake if you utilize the technology.

yes, because PCs are so productive and relatively inexpensive, large enterprises will employ many PCs.
In fact, personal computers have become so common place and productive that most (if not all) enterprises will fail without them.
