I have a hp with windows xp home. It wakes up from standby and hibernate and when it does the actual tower sounds like the fan starts running. I close all programs, I have the energy star setting, and I have run spybot and norton in safe mode. All input is greatly appreciated.

If you have set up Norton or Spy-bot to do a daily scan at certain time of day, that may be waking the computer up to do those scheduled scans.

If anything at all moves your mouse( an accidental nudge, vibrations, etc.) your computer will come out of standby. try moving your mouse away to were it wont be moves and put something under it for padding. plus there are settings you can change for your computer. if you go into the options you can change your settings.

Is it set to wakeup while it gets community connections? Unplug your community connection then standby / hibernate and notice if it fixes it. If it does disable "awaken on lan" (on your bios and abode windows)
