It all depends on the area you are from. I would ask people you know around you what carrier they use and their experiences..
I have had great luck with T-Mobile and Verizon.. The only place i go where my T-Mobile will not work is the locker room of the ice rink i go and play hockey at, but im obviously not in there to talk on the phone.. My Verizon phone works in most places, but they are not perfect either, but by far the best carrier i have. I do prefer the sound of a GSM phone (Cingular or T-Mobile) over a CDMA phone, the codec that GSM uses is much better than the CDMA codec, it sounds much more like a landline..
Verizon is very good at brainwashing it's customers into thinking they have the absolute best network (see some other answers to this question, no offense to anyone).. While Cingular is horrible around here compared to other providers (Columbus, OH), i know a few places where Cingular will work better than Verizon, so it's all about location.
The first thing you want to look at is who are the people you talk to the most on? Me, it doesnt matter because all of mine are spread between Verizon, Sprint CDMA, and Sprint iDen (Nextel), and a few on Cingular.. so T-Mobile is a decent option for me. but i did keep my Verizon line as it's a secondary on a FS plan, but i havent had to use it yet because of T-Mobile not having service..
T-Mobile is an excellent choice if they have a good network where you're at.. here they are the best GSM provider i've found.. worlds above Cingular in terms of network quality here in Columbus..
but again, it's all about location.
Honestly, if i were you, look into Alltel (to answer the name of the company of the person above me), if you can get them in your area, generally they cover their areas well, and have great pricing..

Verizon Wireless is the best. They have the most reliable network. You have 15 days to try their service, you could even change out a phone if you want to in that 15 days. They have great customer service over the phone or in the stores and if you have a problem you get it resolved immediately. I have had 3 different cell companies and they are the best all around.

I would say cingular and verizon, most people i know have those two, i just switched to tmobile for better plan rates, and now I know why they are cheaper, cause I can't get any service. I had cingular for 3 years, never had a problem. The tmobile plan started yesterday, I cant even get reception at my apartment.

you should try that one where is gives you a certain amount of minutes no matter who you call. I can't think of the name but there are alot of commercials. You know the one where all the nerdy people are sitting at the table in the food court and they offer this guy like $7 dollars to stop selling the phone to people. I wish I knew the name sorry.
