There's not one scintella of evidence of a pre-ordained plan. What makes a person stand out anyway?
Greatness may last a thousand years for a few and eternally for none. On the scale of earthly time, individual lives are but mere blinks of an eye. We're born, we live, we die and then you're not heard from ever again. There might be a tombstone or family tree made with your name on it, but eventually the tombstone weathers from age and who knows what media your family tree will be used. All the memories and accomplishments will be totally forgotten, unless you're a Hitler or Alexander the Great type person. The conflict in the Middle East will be forgotten in a thousand years from now.
In a thousand years, your bones as well as those in the middle east will be dust and no other trace of yours or their existence will be seen, unless, of course they become fossilized for some reason, but even then, after thousands of years more, that will be disintegrated into dust. We influence the lives of our children and others, but they too will eventually die. So what's the point of living?
In astronomical terms, the Earth will eventually succumb to the supernova of our Sun, it's an astonomically certainty the earth will be burned to a crisp.
So does death render our lives meaningless. If we were immortal, that would be the ultimate in boredom, repetition, day after day, of doing the same thing for thousands of years (hundreds may be OK, but nothing beyond that)....but i digress, back to your question.
It all boils down to how creative we can be in the short period of time we have on this earth....Our activities need to be worthwhile for their own sake, not because they fulfill some supernatural transcendental purpose....
And why did our benevolent Creator create predation, the disease, the birth defects, the evil in the world, and the parasites? Are these examples of his beneficient and intelligent design? Also, if the design was so intelligent, why did he have to keep coming out with new & improved models? (the best example are the extinction of the Neanderthals, but there were over 15 other hominid species that didn't make it). Does evolution depend on what's happening in theo world today. It does take advantage of wars, thats for sure, but its not 'supposed' to happen.

Well, I believe to a certain extent that it is part of a grand design.
Because of free will we have the ability to change things on a personal level but the grand design will still happen. I believe that God has a plan for the earth and the humans in it. It is up to us as individuals to decide what part have in the end

I think people who don't see that mankind is going through a form of evolution are blind. Our DNA is changing and causing a very different brain and for some, body. It may get worse before it gets better, but those who are too romantic and want things to stay the way they are, well, no...life will be rough for them because they won't understand the chaos around them and could possible die for it.
