One is neutralization, the other is hydrolysis. Aspirin is acetylsalicylic acid. So one reaction is to neutralize the acid with sodium hydroxide to form sodium acetylsalicylate. The other is to cook aspirin with excess sodium hydroxide solution to form sodium salicylate and sodium acetate.
