If you go by record sales and awards won I would say that for females you have Kelly Clarkson followed by Gwen Stefani, and JoJo. For men you have of course Justin Timberlake, and probably even Chris Brown is quite popular.

I guess it's the genre. Kenny Chesney and Beyonce. At one time Shayna Twain had sold more records than anyone, but I don't know if it's true. Carrie Underwood is extremely popular, too.
