I've always had a irregular menstrual cycle. My friends tell me to go on birth control to regulate it, but I don't mind being irregular. What kind of medical problems are involved with irregular cycles?

I'm not sure if you are asking if irregular periods can cause problems or what causes periods to be irregular. The following website should answer your question. It addresses both situations.

Good luck!

I have experience with an irregular menstrual cycle.

I had always had irregular periods from my teens through my twenties. The medical problem in my case, due to not doing anything, my irregularity became worse to the point where it went from skipping months during my teens to bleeding all the time by my late 20s.
I was put on the pill to stop the bleeding and to get me regular. I'm still on them thirteen years later.

One thing I remember about being irregular is you never know for sure when your period is coming.

Also, if you have sex, this can be bad because you could get pregnant. Due to not knowing when your periods are coming, you also never know when you ovulate. You can ovulate at any time and get unexpectedly pregnant.

I hate to see anyone else go through what I did. I'd rather see someone get treated for the problem.

Hello! - Ask your doctor about endometriosis. One of the symptoms is irregular periods. I started on the birth control pill when I was 20 just because of irregular periods(no pain, cramps or anything) and stayed on them consistantly. Then about 8 years later I got laid off from my job and lost my insurance so I stopped taking my pills and that's when I started having irregular periods again but this time with severe pain, bloating, headaches, etc. Turned out I had(have) endometriosis, but I suffered for almost 3 years before I found out I had it, and it was all because I went off the pill. I just took the pills to keep my periods regular. The pills kept my endo under control for all those years and I didn't even know it. I'm am not telling you all this to scare you by any means - just bring it(endometriosis) up to your doctor if you're concerned. A lot of women have endometriosis and don't know it. Type in 'Endometriosis' on a search engine if you want to find out more info and see if you have any more symptoms. If you do have it, it's something you can get under control now. I tell you from my own experience - if you know about it early, take care of it as soon as you can. Because it took me so long to find a Dr. that would work with me, I had to go through a lot to get me back to 'normal'. To make the long story short - I'm now back on birth control pills to keep my periods regular so my hormones stay balanced. I am just speaking from my own personal experience. I wish you well and hope my advice was somewhat useful to you. Take Care!!
