I first noticed the lump a week ago cleaning his cage. I must confess, I don't really like handling him, but my daughter is so in love with her "Fudge". When she asked me about it I told her he just had food in his jaw, but today it's much larger and firm. My husband says it is an abcess. Will it go away? Does he need to go to the vet? I guess I need to know if I'm over reacting, or is this serious? I know I took on the responsibility for his total care when I purchased him, and he's such an important member of our family, but I don't know if I can afford an expensive Vet bill if it's something that will go away on its own.

I'm sorry, let me clarify. My daughter calls him fudge. I did'nt feed him chocolate. I feed him a mixture or dried fruits and veggies, seeds like sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds. Dried corn, peas, and dried fruits as well. We also on occasion give him chopped celery, carrots, apples, ect..

sounds like an abcess. Some vets will see hamsters for simple problems like this, usually the hamster will need to be sedated and the abcess lanced. If it is more than that, a tumor, then it really depends on how far you want to go to treat the hamster.

sounds like his jaw is impacted. If you are feeding him all that chocolate and sugar he probably needs to get a tooth pulled. chocolate is deadly to cats and dogs dont know how it affects a hamster. there are treats of all kinds that are good for the hampster. why are you giving him bad treats. He could have an impacted tooth and yes he needs to be seen. try a clinic that works with reduced costs. check and call around in your area. stop the sugar and get him on proper diet

well my freinds hamster had one of these,if its confined to his cheek its probably a pouch for food, but if its bigger and not confined to his cheek,it could be a tumor,my friends hamster had one,it died in little over 2 weeks, id take it to the vet,im not sure there will is much they can do though (also it can be cancer but this is even less likely than a tumor)

The hamster is storing food in a pouch located just inside it's cheek. This is normal.

Hamsters have cheek pouches where they keep food. They can have a bulge on one side or both or neither.
