Oddly enough I do. I often start it. But I don't encourage more. Just polite chatter usually. It would be rare fro me to pursue more. And I don't often let others get closer than chatter. I talk with many I come in contact with-the paper boy, mailman, people in stores in line, those sitting next to me, people with children or pets and ect.
There are no strangers in this world, just friends we've never met. Who knows what a kind word will do for someone.
True story;
I once talked to a 90 year old man (told me his age) in a store in line. He told me Thank-you I was the first person who paid attention to him in days. When he was gone the cashier said how she was often irritated at him-because he was so slow, getting wallet out. placing items and such--said she will never be that way again after his comment to me. You never know.

Always! I rarely instigate small talk, however working with customers saying g'day and smiling or commenting on a product, I respond in kind which often leads to finding out "the grandkids'll be here for holidays, so I have to buy....etc etc". 5 minutes of my time costs me nothing.
