You can .But you have to reload all software. Before formattimg please try my suggestion...! You first try to carryout system restore to a day previous to the day when there was no virus or any problems. It may be a few weeks or months back. You have to decide the date. Detailed instructions are posted at http://fixit.in/systemrestore.html The problem will be solved. Then,You insatll a standard antivirus soft ware such as Norton, AVG , Avast ( free antivirus software and Ad-aware, Ewido ( free spyware removers). You can download free softwares at
http://fixit.in/antivirus.html and http://fixit.in/spywareremover.html
After running the virus scan delete all temprory internet files including off line content and also unwanted files and temp. files. Finally, carryout a defragmentation . Your system will be back to the normal...!

It would be a good idea to try Norton antivirus 2007 for XP to clean up your computer first. Use the reformat as the lasts resort. Good Luck.

Formatting the disk will erase EVERYTHING, not just the Trojan Horse. Start the computer in DOS mode, and at the "C:\>" prompt, enter the command "Format C:" (without the quotes, of course), and press the enter key. You will be warned that it will erase everything, and type "y" and press enter to accept that, and you will reformat the HD.

When you reformat you wipe the whole darn thing out. There wont be any windows files left. Your best bet would be to break down and buy Norton and destory the virus then use your windows disk to repair the OS.

Yep, you can pretty much reformat your computer no matter what condition its in due to viruses. You're going to lose everything that was on your computer so hopefully you backed it up. Reboot with your XP CD in the drive and go from there.

Yes. Reformat your hardrive will kill everything in it, but i usually reserved that as a last resort because you'll loose all your softwares, settings and preference---not to mention it's a pain to do a reinstall. Try these solutions first:

Yes, you can format and it will erase EVERYTHING, not just the winlogon.exe and then simply reinstall with your windows disc or your system recovery discs.
