Lee Kuan Yew once said how proud he was of Singapore's achievements under his leadership and then added "just imagine what I could have done with a larger island, like Jamaica" (or words to that effect).

It also occurs to me to ask - what is Jamaica best known for? My answers are Michael Manley, Rastafarianism, Michael Holding, and rum. And of course tourism. And, unfortunately, street violence in Kingston. Which all suggests that maybe the real reason for any shortage of entrepreneurial activity in Jamaica is that Jamaicans give a higher priority to having fun.

There was a time when Jamaicans had a reputation for having a chip on their shoulder, much more than other West Indians. I hope that has changed.
