In Sweedish, smorgasbord literally translates to "sandwich table" but typically if someone says, "There was a smorgasbord of food" they mean there was a whole bunch of food. Similar to the type of feast some American's have on Thanksgiving. Everything you can imagine is available for eating.

I know in America a smorgasbord is a restaurant where you pay one price and eat all you can eat for that one price. There is usually a salad bar and then several entrees to choose from, all kinds of side dishes, and usually several desserts to pick from. And you can go through the line as many times as you like.

Smorgasbord is a cold hors d'oeuvre buffet. But note that you asked your question in the wrong category... it is prevalent in Sweden, not Switzerland.

Um, in America I preceive it as being like a 'mix' of things. Like if you have a smorgasbord for dinner it's like having a whole bunch of leftovers.....I hope you know what I mean!

Its the same thing as a Buffet. More than one choice of all your food and desserts, and all you can eat.
