"Edgar Allan Poe (January 19, 1809 – October 7, 1849) was an American poet, short story writer, editor, critic and one of the leaders of the American Romantic Movement. Best known for his tales of the macabre, Poe was one of the early American practitioners of the short story and a progenitor of detective fiction and crime fiction. He is also credited with contributing to the emergent science fiction genre.[1] Poe died at the age of 40. The cause of his death is undetermined and has been attributed to alcohol, drugs, cholera, rabies, and other agents."

1. Edgar Allan Poe is considered one of the father's of the popular thriller, horror, sci-fi stories. Many times he took current stories from the news and embellished the circumstances.
2. He is also very well known for his poetry.
3. Not only a writer/poet, he was a respected critic during his time. Posthumously, malicious gossip was circulated that he was a drunk, unstable husband, etc., by a man who was given a poor review by Poe. It wasn't until the later half of the 1900's, that the Poe Society in Philadelphia was able to shed light on this viscious axe to grind. Contrary to the gossip, Poe was a very dedicated husband and responsible provider, and caregiver to his TB-ill wife.
4. The Poe House in Philadelphia restored the home to it's original state. I was able to visit it on many ocassions, and saw the transformation.
5. Poe also lived for a time in the southeast area of Washington, D.C., approximately a mile from the capitol. It was a safer place to live in that area during his time. Not now. He also lived in Baltimore, and there is debate over where his actual burial site is. Is it in Richmond, Virginia, or Baltimore, Maryland? I've visited both.
Good Luck and Warm Wishes.

He wrote some of the creepiest horror stories, usually dealing with madness and murder. I love his works. Generally they're short stories. He also wrote poetry. "The Raven" is his most famous poem. "and the raven said no more..."
I think he had some drug or alcohol problems which may have contributed to the weirdness of his stories. Read "The Black Cat" if you get a chance.
