I know every child is different...but here is my question: my daughter just turned 7 months old...was eating very little solids and close to 40 oz of formuala a day...all of a sudden she has decided to eat solids. Half a jar in the morning and 2 jars (4.5 oz) in the evening (but has cut back to like 24 oz of formula). Is this too much...it just seems like such a leap from hardly anything...and I've been told you can't overfeed a baby...is this true? Did any of your kids do this so suddenly?? Just curious...

You really can't overfeed a baby, but it is good to let them choose when and how much they want to eat. My son is 9 months and my wife uses the powdered kind of formula you mix with water, Enfamil Lipil w/iron, he still drinks it. Yes, he did have a different appetite when she started to give him more baby food. Some days he didn't want the baby food at all. When she introduced different food he ate them and still had formula. She told me that she likes to use the formula with everything, because it has adequate vitamins and all of the things that babies need for growing. With baby food it is suggested to give them 2-3 servings (4.5 oz) jars or 3-5 servings of fruits and veggies. It can be a lot for a baby to eat 7-10 jars of baby food in a day, but that is what is recommended. What i found was easy was to feed him/her jar food when they wake up in the morning or after a nap. I works great with my son. You can only assume that after a nights sleep or a 1-3 hour nap your baby has got to be hungry. Just try giving her the baby food when you know she is most hungry. I am not a doctor, but i do have 2 very healthy boys. The baby food and solid food is started at 4,5,and 6 months for a lot of reasons, to get your baby off the bottle, to develop chewing and swallowing, and to get the baby to simply eat solid foods. The Internet is helpful, but always check with your babies doctor. Hope this helps......

First of all, you're very right that every child is different. Your dh sounds like she's eating what she needs. All children go through phases with everything, food not least of all. Her solids intake sounds normal to me.

I do need to say that 40oz of formula sounds like an awful lot, but since she just switched from that to food, she should be fine.

I've got three kids, and at one point or another they have all freaked me out with eating habits. It's hard for us as parents (and therefore separate people) to know whether they are getting everything they need to be healthy. However, we can make sure that they have access to only healthy choices. We have to just trust that they will know when they are hungry or not or thirsty or not. And fortunately for everyone this usually works out fine:)

At 7 months old your baby is drinking a bit too much formula....the norm is around 12-16 oz a day.
The baby food.....is normal...be sure to introduce new foods at 2 week intervals (to check for food allergies)
When you cut her back to the usual 12-16 oz a day of formula...she will probably eat more baby food.
Keeping your regular "well child" checks at your peds office will determine if she is gaining wt. appropriately.!

Dont worry about it a baby knows when they're full! Congrats she is discovering new foods, she likes it, give her a variety of flavors. Keep giving her all the formula she will take for the nutrients that may not be in the baby food she ate that day and obviously for the liquid.

Every child is diffrent. It does seem she is intaking too much formula, but your pediatrician can better advise. My son stopped drinking formula at 6 months....period!! I then started him on 1% milk. Against the Dr's wishes, but he wouldn't drink
anything else. At 7 months, he would no longer eat babyfood, except for the desserts. (after I stocked up) I was nervous, but he adjusted quite well to table food.

my suggestion is to upgrade your solids to a thicker substance..for example if she is at a one maybe try giving her a two now... But she sounds perfectly normal... You can overfeed a baby but usually they know when to stop... Try feeding her regular foods like mashed bananas or potatoes...

Well I haven't had kids yet but am usually surrounded with others' babies!Well you can't over feed a baby because she knows when shes been fed too much!If she doesn't know when she's been fed too much you'll find out when she throws up!Then start feeding her less!

Unlike adults, kids quit eating when they're full. She'll know when to stop.

She's probably having a growth spurt!!
