sounds like a catalytic converter issue. do you use this van a lot? have you put over 100,000 miles on it? if yes to either, then that's probably the culprit.

sounds like it might be a problem with the EGR valve(exhaust gas recirculation) the valve regullates a portion of burned exhaust gasses back into the intake system alot of times the little needle that controls the flow of gas in the valve will get carbon build up on it and can cause it to stick. you don't usually really feel a differance when driving normally but the second you put the engine under a load most of the symptoms you described above can occure. usually autozone will scan you car for free for you, youd be looking for an EGR code. either way you're better to let a mechanic take a look at it. good luck

Check your fuel tank cap.
Is it loose or does it have a bad seal?
I'm not joking!
If the computer module detects a loss of vacuum in your fuel system (emission from fuel vapor), it will turn your check engine light on.
If you find a loose cap or bad seal, remedy and remove the negative battery cable for a few seconds and replace, to reset computer module. If the light stays off for a couple of cycles (start/drive), problem solved.

The easiest thing to do is have the dealer read the diagnostic codes for the problem and provide you with an estimate of repair costs. (If you get an oil change, most dealers will provide an estimate at no cost) However, you might want to replace the fuel filter first if it has not been replaced yet.

get yourself a haynes manual and a code detector when the engine light comes on plug in the code reader under the dash on the drivers side engine off and the key on and the check engine light will blink out the numbers like 21 will be 2 blinks for two and 1 for one and then look it up in the code book and then you will find your problem

Most likely cause is catilytic converter. This is part of your exhaust piping, it resembles a muffler that is located between motor and actual muffler. Yes these symptoms can have pretty rapid onset. Pretty cheap, and if thats not it, its a good idea to change anyway. good luck.

i own a repair shop,and what needs to be done before you start spending money on it,is to take it and have auto zone scan it to check for trouble codes stored in the computer,,it will have some there because of the check engine light,,and they can tell you what caused this to happen to it,and also what you need to fix it with,,i could tell you a lot of thing to check,but that would waste your time,,have it scanned and see what they say about it,,good luck with it,i hope this helps,,have a good x-mas.

if it is external to the tank, then it should be found on the driver side of the truck, inside of the frame close to the gas tank. it should require a 20mm and a 16 mm wrench for the filter alone.

Check the Cadillac converter it could be stop up.
It will make one do that.
