Bacteria, especially E. coli don't necessarily need nutrients to grow. They just need certain conditions. In optimal conditions the bacteria will grow at it's best. Some bacteria need oxygen, while others do not. Some need a hotter temp. while others rely on a cooler one in order to grow...pH may be a factor as well as salt concentratons.

agar it self considered as a nutrient because it is a natural branched polysaccharides obtained usually from algae or seaweed. so these polysaccharides are a good media for bacterial growth and this will encourage its reproduction.
