Most pediatricians will frown upon the use of baby powder. It can be irritating to a baby's respiratory system. I have used powder before though for the same reasons that you describe. The key is to make sure that you try not to use too much powder and try your best to keep any type of "cloud" often produced from the powder container when dispensing away from the baby. Put a small amount in your hand or on a tissue and apply it that way instead of squirting it directly on the area. This reduces the cloud of white...As already stated make sure that the irritated area is clean and try to pat dry if possible. The powder will help dry the area, however the zinc oxide in the diaper rash creams will help the area to heal. Beware, the zinc oxide can also sting.

My sons pediatrician said do not use baby powder ever. It is fine coursed stone. I also read this is many baby articles. It may cause more rash if gotten in creases of skin.
The best thing I found was to put vaseline on the rash then put desiten. By putting the vaseline on first the ointment sticks perfectly. If the rash gets really bad. Use neosporin with pain relief then ointment. The crying stops almost instantly.
Also, try to figure out why your baby is getting the rash. At first, my son got a serious rash after eating carrots so I had to cut his serving in half and gradually increase his servings. Also too much fruit did the same thing as carrots. Any Pamper products gives him a rash within 2 hours. We sometimes experience this when the daycare puts a pamper on him instead of his huggies.
Good Luck.

I was told never to use Baby Powder. So I haven't, partly because it irritates my lungs as well. I would recommend using an ointment like Balmex when there's a rash present or looks like it's forming. I use Vaseline at every diaper change though. Works for me.
My son had a FUGLY rash at 2wks. and I couldn't keep the Balmex on the shelf at my house. Once that passed, I have it around in case the rash wants to come back. The key to ointments is Zinc Oxide...I've used less expensive brands with the same active ingredient and they work just as well. But seeing as how I'm a BRAND WHORE...I go for the name brand anyway! LOL!

I would use both if possible. However baby powder will really help. Also, keep your baby without a diaper sometimes, like right after bath time, just so it can have a little air for a while.

Depends...Baby powder will dry it if anything do both but make sure the area is clean before you do any of it. If it doesnt heal up in a couple days though go see the dr, babies get yeast infections too, even boys and you may need to use something else to get it to clear up.

Well hospitals now say that you shouldn't use baby powder because of the risk of inhalation by the toddler, and a infection..But try baby powder with cornstarch..Johnsons and johnsons makes it, my son got a little rash and I put that on and checked him like 45 minutes later, and it was gone :)

Baby powder can be very bad for a baby's respiratory system. I would look for a different type of ointment. For example Desitin Creamy always worked better at sticking to my baby when traditional Desitin wouldn't.

We use both when our son has a rash - Balmex and Baby Powder- the kind with cornstarch. Both have seemed to help with our son's rashes. I always use powder no matter what though.

baby powder will draw out the moisture and actually hold it to the babies skin and the ointment will not let it touch the babies skin........
