Question of the night:

What if all of my tax money that goes to fund social welfare programs could instead be contributed to charity? What if we were required to give the same amount, but rather than giving to the government to administer, we gave it to a reputable charity? Would it still be OK, or is the fact that the federal government adminsters these programs important?

I think that charity is charity and that anyone who supports the needy is reputable. I don't need for the government to pay for everything.

I think we should also consider donating to the war of our choice. Why do those of us who had the good sense to stay out of war have to finance it with our taxes? Also there is corporate welfare to the corporations of this country about to go bankrupt. I think people should also donate to the big business of their choice instead of giving it to the government to decide whether or not Enron should be bailed out with my tax dollars. If the people want Enron or whatever bailed out, they should dig deep into their own pocketbooks to provide that instead of American tax dollars paying for corporations to win elections for the Republicans.

I really think the government should butt out! What people support, people can pay for. It would sure beat voting....I believe in putting money where your mouth is.

Who do you think benefits from the social welfare programs? Contributing to charity? What charities do you have in mind? For the poor? Social Welfare Programs are benefiting the poor. Social Welfare Programs apply for grants -- grant funding comes from taxes received. Big donations for charity usually goes to cancer research, aids research, boys and girls clubs, animal shelters, etc.

Who do you think is the largest group of people donating to the taxes to benefit the social programs and the schools? It is those that make above $35,000 a year. The largest taxes paid out is from those that make over a million dollars a year. People that make less than 30 to 40 thou a year contribute very little to nothing to the taxes in this country.

People need to get a grip on what is truly going on in this country and stop listening to band-standing blowhards.

There are so many people benefiting from tax cuts, discounts, and breaks that people do not realize how tax money is truly being distributed, nor who is the majority of who is dishing it out.

For this question to be even pointed toward liberals is already starting of ignorant. Do you even know completely what liberals stand for? Do you know what conservatives stand for and advocate for? Same goes for democrats? Get a clue people.

You can give me all the thumbs done, but before you do -- do some gosh dang research and figure things out for yourselves.
Don't even quote me because some of my figures could be a tad be off, but the thought and ideas are there and right-- just use what I say as a mode of a way to getting you to think.

DO THE RESEARCH --- FIND THE FIGURES --- DON'T GO BY WHAT BAND STANDING BLOW HARDS ARE SAYING.

Hey look I don't like dishing it out anymore then you do. However I do enjoy having one of the best public school in the country. I was greatful for the fire department the was able to put out the fire in the complex I lived. I also like knowing that if there is an emergency I can call the police department and they will be here.
I enjoy taking my two year old to the library where he is able to pick and book and be awed by the pages and the stories. I enjoy the 7 playgrounds my community provides and the maintance of those restrooms. Those are some of the other things tax dollar goes to.

well... it really depends... governments seem to have access to things that most private companies do not, like let's say surplus farm supplies from government buyout programs, that they can process through the welfare agencies to get them to the people that need them...

either way though... but I would very much like heavy oversight of any program, private or government...

as far as I am concerned, any organization that gets large ends up with corruption... it seems to be much more an issue of size than it is a "government" or "private" issue... as many large charities have had some horrible records with accounting...

BUT, you do get large tax deduction for giving to chairty, so what you're talking about is often the case...

Lots of problems with your logic here. First off, the welfare you speak of is such a small percentage of our overall budget that it's too insignificant of a topic to discuss. The only welfare that has any impact is corporate welfare. Your tax dollars are going to Iraq, 100,000+ treasonous contractors, and tax-breaks for Big oil and the Pharmeauciticals. Why not post a question relevant to these/real issues? I guess the Republickend tactic of making a mountain out of a molehill in order to keep the simpleminded folk's brains occupied is working.

tm has a point. I beleive that the government run programs are actually more efficient that private charities in that many private charities take HUGE cuts of contributions for "administrative expensives" -- I am talking 50% and more.

Either way, someone's going to get their cut. Whether it be the government, or the people who run the charities.

I have no problem with anything you just said. That would be fine. Additionally I am all for cutting any social program that is not producing results worth the money we are investing in it.

What I feel I must say here is I am extremely angry and frustrated that BILLIONS of dollars that we are WASTING in this INSANE war in Iraq COULD instead go to help the homeless, hungry, uneducated and needy HERE.

The amount of money spent on social welfare programs is miniscule peanuts compared to what the present administration has wasted since they took office. This country is suffering the greatest deficit the entire world has ever known, or will know, thanks to them. Why don't we discuss that?
