To be honest, leather coats are a bit out of fashion now and tend to come off as a bit pretentious--- unless you are a celebrity or someone really really good looking.
I would suggest looking at some wool peacoats. They are still in fashion after several years, very versitile, and warm. You can get several scarves to wear with different outfits. Black, traditional dark navy, and grey are all hot.
They look great on women too (especially those with ties around the waist)
Check out the Gap and Banana Republic. Old Navy makes some that are styled quite nicely if you want to buy more than one (navy with the brown shoes, grey or black with the black shoes!!! hahaha). They are cheap and you can buy a new one next year if you get sick of it.
Again, trim and tidy is in, so purchase one in your size.
EDIT: sorry, I answered this thinking you were a dude!! haha
still, I think you should look into the wool peacoats or "car coats" as they are sometimes called. Gap or Banana Republic. I think the ones with the ties around the waist are great, classic fashion for all ages.

Probably not. Part of the warmth of the big puffy coats is from the warmth of the air trapped between the layers. Leather coats do warm up as you wear them, but because there's no insulation they'll lose warmth as quickly.
Of course if you're talking a leather coat with a padded liner, then sure it'll keep you warm, but mostly because of the liner, not because of the leather.

I have a leather coat with a zip out liner and it is VERY warm. I have had the puffy coats, and I think my leather, especially with the liner in is just as warm. Maybe warmer.

long leather-based coats keep you heat as an outer layer. the considerable that's layering. You reported you could placed on a sweater decrease than it, then which ability definite, it fairly is going to be stable as an outer shell. needless to say you will freeze if it is the only factor you placed on over your outfits. Like I reported, think of of it as a stable, wind resistant, outer shell. you could placed on a delicate shell jacket or sweater below it as your inner layer.

I've found that leather coats make me overly warm. Sometimes I get so hot i start to sweat and i have to take my jacket off. I wouldn't recommend it, but you can wear it if you want.
