Well, he's super, of course. He doesn't need sleep. He's a superhero. Duh.

In the "Death and Life of Superman" Novelization It is said that he sleeps about 2hours a night, but that he functioned rather well in college on only one hour.
One assumes that in college most of his exertion was mental, rather than in his duel Career as Superman and Clark Kent-Reporter where he is far more physical and would require more sleep.

I also wonder if he breaths. In the movies he goes into space and seems fine. Are these questions they purposely leave unanswered? (much like how the Incredible Hulk always manages to keep his pant on after the change)

He doesn't have to sleep, but he likes to lay down and dream sometimes. The yellow sun of Earth keeps his mind fresh, so he doesn't need it like we do. Too bad they didn't integrate that into the storyline of Smallville. Clark Kent and his double life, never needing to sleep, he goes to school by day and fights crime at night... Or bails hay at night so no one sees how fast he keeps the farm cared for. Hey, shouldn't they have the nicest farm? Clark could totally use his powers to make diamonds or build furniture or whatever to make fast cash for his family too. Bah! It's all for drama, not reality.

Physically he does not need sleep, as he does not get tired, but psychologically he does, to let the brain do whatever sort of recharging it does while he sleeps.

I'm sure I've seen him sleeping in the comic books but I'm not sure on the movies.
