they take a swab of ure cheek cells and test those.

not a cotton swab!! It's a little clear piece of plastic that you either lick or press to your tongue and remove. When your saliva dry's, the pattern of your saliva determines if you're ovulating. I've never tried it, it sounded kind of hokey to me. But if you're ttc, anything's worth trying once!

I don't really understand the science, but you can look at the pattern the saliva makes under a scope. If you see a particular pattern called ferning you may be ovulating
