batterys in ipods are meant to last for 2 years or 1000 charge cycles. if you want to change it you can take it into an ipod related site and they can do it for you, or ring up apple, and you can get a new battery for about £60. yes, a rip off, but doing it yourself means you have to open the ipod up, and risk short circuiting it doing so.

if you have any doubts (and there are lots of reasons in my mind to have doubts about iPods) then consider buying a better, cheaper and more capable MP3 player than apples propriatory iPod & iTunes scams

some players use standard batteries, some use rechargeables which are accessible without voiding the warranty.

some players are smaller

consider looking at Iriver, Creative or Archos... all do more for less.

dont be avictim of fashion and buy into Apples propriatory predatory assault on music. do you wnat you music that youve paid for limited where you play it... say no to DRM

I've had mine for a little over a year and a half. Never had any problems at all, with the battery or anything else.
