Mint jelly is terrible, however I enjoy a good lamb and one of the best I have had is made with mustard.
3 tablespoons coarse-grained mustard
2 cloves garlic, minced
1-1/2 teaspoons dried rosemary, crushed
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1 leg of lamb, well trimmed, boned, rolled and tied (about 4 pounds)
1) Combine mustard, garlic, rosemary and pepper. Rub mustard mixture over lamb. Place roast on meat rack in foil-lined shallow roasting pan.Preheat oven to 400°F. Roast 15 minutes. Reduce oven temperature to 325°F; roast about 20 minutes per pound for medium or until internal temperature reaches 145°F when tested with meat thermometer inserted into thickest part of roast.
2) Transfer roast to cutting board; cover with foil. Let stand 10 to 15 minutes before carving. Internal temperature will continue to rise 5° to 10°F during stand time.
3) Cut strings from roast; discard. Carve into 20 slices.

Yes I have ... on pears! Try putting a small dollop on a pear half, in the cavity where the seed was. You may be pleasantly surprised by how the mint jelly and pear tastes go together.
As for lamb, I can eat it with or without mint jelly. It's also good with a marmalade sauce, or with Catalina dressing brushed on chops that are then broiled. But you really don't need to put anything on lamb to enjoy it (if lamb is what you like).

I'm guessing they picked cranberry jelly because of it's tart sweetness. If you want to stay true to the recipe without bother your mum, I'd say try a little lemon juice. You could make a simple gravy, put in a little lemon juice and some rosemary, and use that instead of the jelly. Lemon and rosemary work really well together in many recipes, and the bite of the lemon will mimic the cranberry without being too much like fruit.

Only had it once, and it was on lamb. Not my choice. Never again, I love lamb but jelly does not belong on meat!!
