By not allowing Colonial representation in Parliament, and by expecting the Colonies to continue to contribute significantly to the royal coffers through taxation and exploitation of natural resources. The Brits neglected the colonies in the sense that they sat back in Jolly Old and let the colonies fend for themselves re: defense against Indians, and foreign (Spanish and French) military incursions. (The British Army had a strong presence here, but the brunt of the fighting army was made up of American colonials.)
